The civic district of Sala (Chellah – Rabat, Morocco): shaping and perceiving monuments under the Roman Empire

Abstract This article investigates the development of urbanism and architecture at site Sala (Chellah), from end first century BC to latter half second AD. By looking transformations in town's civic centre Mauretanian Roman imperial period, aim is assess how layout function public spaces buildings were reshaped respond new ideas monumentality. A range research methodologies are applied address this question, including architectural, archival, archaeological analyses, as well use 3D digital modelling. The case study particular importance, it shows certain pre-Roman monuments kept within contexts, imperial-style, urban architectural features introduced town part trends that can be recognized across North Africa Empire more broadly.
